Boothby Street Clapham Upgrade Works

Boothby Street/ Toronto Avenue and Boothby Street/ Strathcona Avenue, intersection, Clapham Upgrade Works

As a result of the recently announced State Government funding of $1.6 million dollars for the upgrade works along Springbank Road, Clapham, the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure and City of Mitcham have been working in collaboration with the community based Project Working Group to develop preferred schemes for a wider community consultation process. In addition to the proposed upgrade works along Springbank Road, the community raised concerns in relation to the safety of buses using local streets.

The intersections of Boothby Street/Toronto Avenue and Boothby Street/Strathcona Avenue were highlighted as the intersections with road safety issues relating to the unsafe bus movements. In navigating the intersection of Toronto Avenue and Boothby Street, buses have to cross the solid white centreline in both Toronto Avenue and Boothby Street to make the right hand turn from Toronto Avenue into Boothby Street. This is as a result of the turning movement being restricted by both the physical geometry of the existing road network and frequently parked cars obstructing vehicle passage. This results in buses having to position themselves on the wrong side of the road to navigate the intersection thus posing both a safety hazard and causing congestion in the immediate area.

Consultation on the proposed options to upgrade Boothby Street Clapham finished at 5 pm Friday 26 August 2016.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback.

A report is currently being prepared for Council to consider the community feedback.

Boothby Street/ Strathcona Avenue

In navigating the intersection of Boothby Street/Strathcona Avenue the turning movement is often restricted by parked cars in the vicinity of the intersection. This can result in buses having to travel on the wrong side of the road to negotiate this movement. To address this it is proposed to introduce some localised parking restrictions in the vicinity of the intersection.
