To become an Australian citizen, an application must first be lodged with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. Application forms are available on-line at www.citizenship.gov.au Successful applicants will be notified by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection of the outcome of their application.
The final step in the journey to become an Australian citizen, for most people, is to make the Pledge of Commitment at a citizenship ceremony. Citizenship ceremonies are special events. They fulfil requirements under Australian citizenship law. They also provide an important opportunity to officially welcome new citizens as full members of the Australian community.
The City of Mitcham holds four to five ceremonies a year. Invitations to a ceremony are sent approximately four weeks prior by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, and selection of applicants for a ceremony is based on the date of approval of applications and the amount of space available for conferees at the venue. Usually ceremonies are presided over by the Mayor. Requests for urgent ceremonies need to be forwarded to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
