Shed Classes and Activities
What has been happening in the Shed
The City of Mitcham’s Community Shed members have been working on two special projects to support the community.
Shed members have designed and constructed a ramp to assist the clients of the Spastic Centres of South Australia Inc (SCOSA) in the game of boccia. Boccia is similar to bocci but with the facility to assist clients with reduced movement.
Mike and John, members of the Community Shed, lead the project by visiting SCOSA to determine the needs of the players, prepared a design which involved creative thinking as well as the clever use of materials and equipment.
To further support SCOSA shed members are now making wooden toys to sell. All funds raised will be used to purchase a set of boccia balls priced at $500 per set. Visit the City of Mitcham Civic Centre or Community Shed at the Mitcham Cultural Village to purchase a toy and support this project.
The Mitcham Community Shed members are also constructing Nightjar owl boxes to assist the Rotary Clubs of SA project to supply 200 boxes to Monarto Zoo. Over 34 boxes have already been completed during weekly sessions and a working bee.
Community Shed Mezzanine
Ideally suited for meetings and informal talks, this is a light filled open space with pleasant views of the surrounding hills. It has a polished wooden floor, is approximately 10.5 metres by 7 metres with trestle tables and chairs available for use. Access is via a staircase only.
Community
Community Shed Workshop Area
The workshop area is an open space with access to a large number of power points including overhead power supply to workbenches. The floor area is approximately 9.5 metres by 9.8 metres. There is a wet area with large sinks as well as a well ventilated spray booth (2 metres x 2.7 metres). Adjacent to the workshop, and separated by sliding doors covering a 4.5 metres opening, is another area 7 metres by 9.8 metres. This area houses the machinery for community use including circular saw, thicknesser, planer, drill press etc. There is access to this facility from the parking area that will allow for delivery of large items through a roller door.

Programs are likely to include small scale woodwork and other craft activities, papermaking workshops and one-off demonstrations.
We are also looking for volunteers with skills they would like to share to lead community programs in the shed. Maybe your interests are in model making, lead lighting, basketry or working with clay. We would love to talk to you about working together to provide the people of Mitcham the opportunity to explore new and creative activities in this great facility.
If you would like to take part in a shed-based activity please contact the Community Centre Coordinator to register your interest or watch this website more information.
Carvers and Sculptors
If you have an interest in this absorbing craft, you are invited to come along as a visitor, to a maximum of two workshop meetings, at no cost, before deciding whether you wish to take up membership.
Participants can develop carving and sculpture skills, interact socially with others, be proactive in raising standards of sculpture and carving and promoting their recognition as true art forms. We are happy to assist people in woodcarving and some one-on-one tuition will be available at most workshop meetings.
Members bring their own projects and work on them at the workshop after 'Show and Tell' and a short meeting.
Often, one of our members will present a tutorial or demonstration on some aspect of carving or sculpture. We encourage members to exhibit and/or sell their work at two Exhibition venues organised by Woodgroup SA each year.
Contact Graham Jones, President on 8260 2827 or Frank Witcombe, Secretary on 8384 2239 or email frankw231@bigpond.com

Scroll Sawing
South Oz Scrollers
South Oz Scrollers offers the opportunity for people of like interest to meet regularly in a friendly and supportive manner, providing them with the guidance and hands-on opportunities to develop their scroll sawing skills. Scroll sawing also incorporates other traditional woodworking techniques eg jointing, finishing, machining, designing patterns, etc.
The primary crafts promoted in the Club are fretwork and intarsia although members get involved with others like toys, jewellery, puzzles, etc.
