Mitcham Emissions

The City of Mitcham as an organisation creates greenhouse gas emissions by using energy in the buildings we own such as libraries, community centres and council offices. Activities that produce relatively low emissions include waste from our offices and refrigerant gases from our air conditioning units. Our large emissions come from street lighting and fuel to run our kerbside waste services.

We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and we have been measuring our emissions each year to track our progress.

Our emissions in 2012-13 were 5,320 tonnes CO2e, which is an 8% drop from the previous year.

One way Council is reducing our carbon footprint is by purchasing accredited GreenPower to offset 20% of our electricity use. We have recently completed an energy audit of our civic centre which identified changes we can make to be more efficient, for example, changing our lighting to energy efficient globes, upgrading our air conditioning systems and installing solar panels. We have already reduced the number of printers we use in house and have implemented measures that reduce paper wastage.

We are well on track for meeting the targets we set to reduce our emissions by 2016.
