Services offered by the City of Mitcham are designed to meet the needs of people who are frail aged, younger people with a disability and those family or friends who care for them enabling them to remain living in their own homes and participating in the community.

Services are subject to assessment for eligibility for Home and Community Care (HACC) and are provided on the basis of need. Some services have limits and waiting lists may apply to those services in most demand. A small fee is charged for most services. Fees can be adjusted, depending on personal circumstances. Funding for these services is provided by Council, Home and Community Care and consumer fees.

Home Care

Home and Garden Maintenance

Council's Home Maintenance Officers can undertake minor safety repairs and essential maintenance around the home, such as small plumbing jobs, gutter cleaning, changing light bulbs, garden safety and rubbish removal.

Home Security/Safety

Assistance can be provided with the installation of door and window locks, hand rails and battery operated smoke detectors. A free security assessment can also be arranged.

Brokered Assistance

Essential work which requires a qualified expert such as plumbing, electrical faults, ramp installations or essential tree lopping may be completed by a Council approved contractor and the cost subsidised.

Domestic Assistance

Short-term assistance is available in the event of an injury or illness. For those needing longer, assistance may be available over a predetermined fixed term. Ongoing long term domestic assistance is referred to other providers.

Community Participation

Supported by enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers, Council provides a range of opportunities for social interaction and respite for people frail aged, people with a disability and their carers. Lunch clubs have a variety of activities including guest speakers, bus trips, concerts and crafts. Activities are accompanied by lunch (both of which are optional). Transport is available for most activities.

Assistance is also available for people who find themselves isolated and wanting to connect (or reconnect) with a local club, group or recreational activity. Liaison with one of the many groups in the area and the assistance of volunteers make community participation possible.

Community Transport

Council provides transport through the Community Bus to local shopping Centres and Libraries for people who are unable to access public transport or are transport disadvantaged.  Personal transport to essential appointments, some social activities and shopping is also available to people who are HACC eligible.
