Our Philosophy

The City of Mitcham's philosophy of positive ageing acknowledges that ageing is not only about physical challenges, but is a complex transition that also encompasses many beneficial aspects. Factors such as lifestyle choices, planning ahead, social connection and community engagement have equal, if not more, impact on a person's capacity to age well as does their physical or mental health.

By reinforcing the positive potential of our older residents, we aim to promote the gains of ageing rather than focus on the losses. We believe this can be achieved through enabling residents to retain their independence in a safe and supportive environment where they are encouraged to remain in their own homes, stay socially connected, actively contribute to community life, pursue their interests, and, most importantly, pass on their wisdom to others.
