Are you a local community group or resident interested in supporting our community and looking for some financial support to help you achieve this? Our Grants Scheme has a variety of grant categories.  They are easy to apply for and they assist to achieve wonderful things!

What do our grants support?

Mainly not for profit community groups, organisations and individuals who are making a positive contribution to the Mitcham community through a wide range of local cultural, social and recreational initiatives.  The City of Mitcham Grants Scheme supports these groups, organisations and individuals in the delivery of initiatives that may achieve the objectives of:

  • Enhancing physical health and emotional wellbeing
  • Building and strengthening local networks and partnerships
  • Nurturing community leadership
  • Fostering community connections
  • Supporting learning and skill development, and
  • Enhancing cultural understanding.

What are the grants for, how much are the grants worth and when can you apply?

There are seven different grants offered by the City of Mitcham:

Community Development Grants

Up to $2,500 per grant is available to not for profit groups for projects that address one of the following:

  • Community Physical and/or Emotional Health and Wellbeing
  • Community Gardens or Garden Activities
  • Community or Public Art
  • Environmental Improvement
  • Community Connections
  • Community Events

Community Development Grants are offered twice per year in September and March. 

The next round closes on Tuesday 3 October 2017.

Special Community Events / Special Projects Grant

Up to $10,000 per grant is available for community projects or community events that are innovative and special.

Community / Public Art Grant

Up to $25,000 will be available for a community art or public art initiative.

This grant category is being reviewed and is currently not on offer.

Mayoral Grant

Subject to Mayoral direction, for community initiatives.

Mayoral Grants are offered all year round.

Individual Achievement Grants

Up to $200 per applicant is available to support the travel of Council residents or teams whilst representing South Australia or Australia in their sporting, cultural, educational or other field of excellence.

Maggy Ragless Grant

Up to $2,000 is available for original research or projects which celebrate or inform the community about Mitcham's history.

Offered once a year in August.

Heritage Subsidy Scheme

The Mitcham Heritage Subsidy Scheme has been introduced to assist in the conservation of privately owned heritage listed buildings. The grant money comes solely from the City of Mitcham’s budget and is flexible, depending on the property type and circumstances. A subsidy of 25% of the total cost is possible, up to a limit of $3,000.

The Policy covers the owner(s) or lessee(s) of the following properties within the City of Mitcham, with the exception of properties owned by the Local Council or Government Departments:

  • A recognised State Heritage Place
  • A recognised Local Heritage Place
  • Properties located within the State Heritage Area of Colonel Light Gardens
  • A Contributory Item within Historic (Conservation) Zones / Policy Areas

 Following is the format we follow for processing all applications:

  • You provide Council with copies of two quotes for the work, along with a completed application form.
  • Council’s Heritage Adviser will assess your application.
  • The Director, Development and Compliance will decide which project(s) are to be offered grant assistance.
  • Council will notify you of the decision and, if successful, the amount Council will contribute.
  • You will be asked to sign an agreement outlining any special conditions recommended by the Heritage Adviser, in addition to general conditions such as the need for works to be completed within 12 months of an offer of grant assistance.
  • You settle your account (with the individual / company that has carried out the work) in full upon completion of the work.
  • You provide Council with photocopies of the paid account and ‘before and after’ photographs of the work.
  • Council will reimburse you the agreed amount in the form of a cheque or EFT payment.

Approval or refusal of any application under this fund will be determined in accordance with the Council Policy 3.15 Heritage Subsidy Policy, a copy of which is attached, and will be solely at the discretion of the City of Mitcham and subject to availability of funds.

Refugee Grant

The City of Mitcham Refugee Grant, in partnership with the Australian Refugee Association, is for refugees living in, or studying in educational institutions in the City of Mitcham, to assist with their education, training and resettlement within South Australia.  Contact the Australian Refugee Association: 304 Henley Beach Road, Underdale SA 5032, phone 8354 2951 or email reception@ausref.net

Memorial Harvey Hayes Grant

If you live in, or have attended a secondary school in the City of Mitcham and are enrolled to study at Flinders University, you may be eligible to apply for the annual Memorial Harvey Hayes Grant of $1,000.  Further information can be found on their website http://www.flinders.edu.au/scholarships/.

For leaders, innovators and pioneers that have the drive to shape the future prosperity and growth of Australia.

Westpac Foundation Community Grants
For local, grassroots not-for-profit organisations with big (or small) ideas that are providing educational opportunities, employment pathways or improvements in the quality of life of disadvantaged Australians in our local communities.  Worth $10,000 each.

Office for Recreation and Sport
Grants and Scholarships are available for Clubs, Associations and Individuals.

Local Sporting Champions Program
For young people aged 12-18 towards cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when competing, coaching or officiating at an official national sporting event (restrictions apply)

Australian Sports Foundation 
For Australians to participate in sport and/or to excel in sports performance.

South Australian General Grants
