Heritage Buildings and Areas

As South Australia's second oldest Council, Mitcham has a rich and diverse history.  The area is dotted with an abundance of historical buildings and places of historical interest such as Carrick Hill, Old Government House, Blackwood Railway Station, Colonel Light Gardens, and the many examples of colonial architecture in Mitcham Village.  Preserving this special heritage for future generations is very important to Council.

The Flinders University Heritage Reports on the Mitcham area are available by clicking here.

The comments on this site apply to European Heritage, not Indigenous heritage.  Legislation in South Australia recognises the value of protecting significant examples of heritage.  The Development Act 1993 describes how places or areas of State and Local significance can be listed in the Development Plan for a Council area.  Section 23(4)(a)-(g) of the Development Act describes the criteria for listing:

A Development Plan may designate a place as a place of local heritage value if:

  • It displays historical, economic or social themes that are of importance to the local area
  • It represents customs or ways of life that are characteristic of the local area
  • It has played an important part in the lives of local residents
  • It displays aesthetic merit, design characteristics or construction techniques of significance to the local area
  • It is associated with a notable local personality or event
  • It is a notable landmark in the area
  • In the case of a tree (without limiting a preceding paragraph)-it is of special historical or social significance or importance within the local area.

Heritage Places

Councils can list Local places and areas by introducing them into its Development Plan.  They are contained in the Mitcham (City) Development Plan:

  • Table Mit/3 - State Heritage Places

  • Table Mit/4 - Local Heritage Places

The City of Mitcham also contains a State Heritage Area, namely the suburb of Colonel Light Gardens.

When making an application to Council to develop something on heritage listed site additional requirements or controls apply compared with other parts of the Council area.
