To become an Australian citizen, an application must first be lodged with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Application forms are available on-line at http://www.citizenship.gov.au/. Successful applicants will be notified by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship of the outcome of their application.  

The final step in the journey to become an Australian citizen, for most people, is to make the Pledge of Commitment at a citizenship ceremony. Citizenship ceremonies are special events. They fulfil requirements under Australian citizenship law. They also provide an important opportunity to officially welcome new citizens as full members of the Australian community. They are often an emotional experience for the new citizen, as well as their host and guests.

The City of Mitcham holds four ceremonies a year in January, April, July and September. Invitations to a ceremony are sent approximately four weeks prior by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and selection of applicants for a ceremony is based on the date of approval of  applications and the amount of space available for conferees at the venue. Usually ceremonies are presided over by the Mayor. Requests for urgent ceremonies need to be forwarded to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

A special Citizenship Ceremony is held by the City of Mitcham every year to celebrate Australia Day. All residents of Mitcham are invited to attend this special day and to enjoy the free entertainment.
