Building in a State Heritage Area

State Heritage Place enquiries and development application referrals are now undertaken by the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources and/or Council’s Heritage Advisor.

Council’s Heritage Advisor is available to answer development related queries from owners, and provide advice to Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources on minor development within the State Heritage area.  The duties undertaken will be:

  • General guiding advice to property owners in respect of conservation and development affecting within Colonel Light Gardens State Heritage Area;
  • Specialist advice on heritage matters prior to the lodgement of a development application, and in relation to works that do not require formal development approval;
  • Advice on appropriate form, materials and conservation techniques, and on suppliers of specialist conservation services and products;
  • Assisting the Council it its assessment of development applications relating to heritage places in private and public ownership; and
  • Preparation of independent professional advice and drafting of development assessment responses that will inform the statutory response of the Principal Conservation Architect (as delegate of the Minister), Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, in connection with the Colonel Light Gardens State Heritage Area for the following activities:
    • Fences
    • Solar technology
    • Sheds
    • Carports / Verandahs
    • Swimming Pools

What Does This Mean to You

A Heritage Advisor will be available at the Council’s Civic Centre on Thursday mornings to help you with the above queries. It is advised that you make an appointment to see the Heritage Advisor or arrange a time for them to either phone you or meet with you on site.
