Where do I make initial enquiries?

Australian Citizenship applications and enquiries should be directed to the Department of Home Affairs.

To become an Australian citizen, an application must first be lodged with the Department of Home Affairs. Application forms are available on-line at www.homeaffairs.gov.au All applicants will be notified by the Department of Home Affairs of the outcome. What is a Citizenship Ceremony?

The final step in the journey to become an Australian citizen, for most people, is to make the Pledge of Commitment at a citizenship ceremony. Citizenship Ceremonies are special events; they fulfil requirements under Australian citizenship law and also provide an important opportunity to officially welcome new citizens as full members of the Australian community.

The Department of Home Affairs will advise when your application has been processed and approved, enabling you to attend a citizenship ceremony. The Department of Home Affairs will send you an invitaition to your allocated ceremony, which will be influenced by the date of approval of your application and also the amount of space available at the citizenship ceremony venue.

When are Citizenship Ceremonies held in the City of Mitcham?

The City of Mitcham holds ceremonies throughout the year for those applicants that have received prior approval from the Department of Home Affairs.

The upcoming ceremony dates are

  • Monday 17 September, 2018
  • Saturday 26 January, 2019

The Department of Home Affairs will send you an invitation to your allocated ceremony with further information on what you need to bring, what time you need to be there and what to expect on the day. Can other people come along to the Citizenship Ceremony with me?

Yes, you are welcome to bring close family members with you to celebrate; you will be advised of the number of people that can join you in your invitation from the Department of Home Affairs.

Can I attend a Citizenship Ceremony in another Council area instead?

Yes. If you have received approval from the Department of Home Affairs and require to attend a ceremony prior to the next upcoming date with the City of Mitcham, you can participate in a citizenship ceremony with another Council. This will need to be established with the Department of Home Affairs.

Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony held annually on 26 January.

The City of Mitcham hosts an Australia Day celebration each year where we also undertake a citizenship ceremony. All residents of Mitcham are invited to attend this special day and to enjoy the free entertainment.

What you should do after you have received your invitation to participate in a Citizenship Ceremony from the Department of Home Affairs?

You will need to advise Council if you will be attending the ceremony and the number of guests that will be accompanying you. If you require any further information after you have received your invitation from the Department of Home Affairs, please contact the City of Mitcham Events and Grants Officer via email mitchamevents@mitchamcouncil.sa.gov.au
