The local history service maintains an extensive collection of documents, photographs and research relating to the history, development, environment and culture of the district. The publicly available collection includes over 4,000 photographs, cemetery records, local newspapers, community records and a reference library. Knowledgeable staff and volunteers are available to assist you with personal and curriculum based research.
If you are a school or a community group please contact the Local History Coordinator regarding talks or guided tours tailored to meet your particular interests.

Local History Collection
The Local History Collection has been created to collect, collate, catalogue and store information concerning the City of Mitcham to archival standards. The collection consists of historical informational about any aspect of the City of Mitcham. It is predominately paper-based and includes:
- Publications (biographies, histories, etc)
- Reports (Council surveys, assessments, etc)
- Directories and electoral rolls
- Historical research files
- Newspapers
- Maps and plans
- Cemetery indexes
- Old council correspondence indexes
- also includes photos, cassette recordings, videos and electronic material
It is currently the policy of the Local History Collection that artefacts (metal, wood, material items) are not collected or kept in the collection.
The Local History Collection is open to the public and can be accessed from the Local History Service located at the Mitcham Heritage Research Centre during opening hours.
