The City of Mitcham Foyer Gallery presents Reconciliation 2019 an exhibition by Kunyi June Anne McInerney and Yaritji McInerney to recognise the importance of Aboriginal culture and history in Mitcham until 15 July. The Foyer Gallery, located at 131 Belair Road, Torrens Park, is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Kunyi June-Anne McInerney

Kunyi’s works portray a landscape remembered from childhood paintings of family and friends, portrayal of experiences expressing a strong feeling for her people and environment.

Her sensitive use of colour, facial expression and depiction of environment rendered in oil on canvas delivers works that are uniquely her own.

Her work gives us a view into the artist’s childhood experiences in the early 1950s. June-Anne, named Kunyi by her family, was born in Todmorton Station, SA. At the age of 4, Kunyi with her sister and two brothers were placed in Oodnadatta Children’s Mission Home. Upon entry to the home the  missionaries renamed her Anne, but her mother still called her Kunyi.

At 8 years of age Kunyi was fostered out in Adelaide where she was named June. Kunyi lives in Adelaide with her three children.

Yaritji Yvette McInerney (Dr)

Yaritji is the daughter of Kunyi and was born in Perth and lives in Adelaide. She spent a few years in Alice Springs where she worked for the A.P.Y. Women's Council. This is where she learnt dot painting and stories from the women. As a child Yaritji grew up watching her mother Kunyi paint. Yaritji has joined with her mother in exhibiting paintings since she was very young.
