East Waste is responsible for collecting the recycling and green organics material on alternate fortnights. The City of Mitcham comes through weekly to collect the waste from the general waste bin.

2013 2014 Kerbside Waste and Recycling Calendar

Council provides residents with a 240L yellow lid recycling and a 140L blue lid general waste bin at no cost. To use the green organics kerbside service, residents need to provide their own 240L green lid bin.

Missed, stolen and damaged bins

For missed, stolen or damaged bin issues relating to the general waste bin (blue lid) call Council on 8372 8888.

For missed, stolen or damaged bin issues relating the recycling (yellow lid) and green organics (green lid) bin call East Waste on 8347 5111.

Collection Days

General waste is collected weekly with your recycling and green organics bin collected on alternate weeks. Use the map below to determine your collection day.

How to use the kerbside collection system:

• Put the bins out by 6 am on the day of pick up and bring them back in on the same day after collection.
• Face each bin towards the road – wheels towards to the house.
• Bins are required to be one (1) metre apart where possible and one (1) metre from surrounding objects (such as poles, trees, cars, etc.) with plenty of clearance from overhead branches.
• Place the right material in the right bin as contaminated bins may not be collected.
• Don’t overfill your bin and make sure the lid can close.

Delayed collections

Over Easter, Christmas and New Year kerbside waste and recycling collection will be delayed due to the public holidays. These days are listed on the table below.

Kerbside collection in the Mount Lofty Ranges Fire District may also be delayed where Extreme and Catastrophic fire danger ratings are issued by the South Australian Country Fire Service. Residents should leave their bins out until collected.

Recycling Bin

What goes in the recycling bin?

• Tins and cans (including aerosols).
• All glass bottles and jars (rinsed and with lids off).
• Paper and cardboard (e.g. newspapers, magazines, envelopes, junk mail, egg cartons and cardboard boxes – flattened).
• Liquid paperboard cartons (e.g. juice and milk cartons – rinsed).
• Aluminium and steel cans.                 
• Clean plant pots and seedling tubs.
• All rigid plastic containers (e.g. plastic drink bottles, detergent bottles, yoghurt, ice cream and margarine containers – rinsed and lids off).
• Empty pizza boxes, rinsed takeaway coffee cups and aluminium trays.

Recycling Tips

Do not bundle newspaper or cardboard or put your recycling in plastic bags – place all recyclables loose into the bin.

Do not mix recyclables (e.g. putting cans in boxes).

Hard rigid plastic lids can be collected in a plastic milk bottle and plastic in the recycling bin once full.

If you can scrunch a piece of plastic packaging in your hand it cannot be recycled and needs to be either recycled through the soft plastics recycling at major supermarkets or put into your blue lidded bin.

Remove all lids from jars, bottles and plastic containers before putting them in the bin.

Rinse containers as necessary – save waster and use leftover dishwater.

Green Organics

What can I put in my green organics bin?

• Lawn clippings.
• Small prunings and cuttings.
• Bark, small branches and twigs.
• Weeds.
• Seaweed.
• Cut flowers.
• Leaves.
• Food scraps.

Green organics bin tips

If it didn’t grown, it doesn’t go!

Remember you garden waste is a valuable resource used to make compost and mulch, so do the right thing.

Do not put materials in plastic bags or use bin liners.

No soil, rocks, stones, bricks, plant pots, garden tools and hoses.

If you don’t have grass or garden clippings, line your bin with newspaper, it will prevent smelly residue build up from your food scraps

Excess organic material can be taken to Lynton Green Organics Waste Transfer Station or added to your own compost bin.

General Waste

What can I put into my general waste bin?

This bin is for general household waste that cannot be put in the recycling or green organics bin

• Nappies.
• Kitty litter (wrapped).
• Small broken household items such as china and glassware.
• Garbage bags and non-recyclable plastic and food packaging.
• Soft plastics (e.g. reusable green bags, produce bags, bread bags, biscuit and confectionary packaging, rice and pasta packets and frozen food bags)*.
• Cling film, aluminium foil and wine bladders.
• Rags and clothing that cannot be passed on as hand-me downs or given to charity shops.
• Expanded polystyrene (e.g. meat trays, cups and packaging material).
• Ropes and hoses.
