Mukapaanthi artwork to be installed

Work is under way to install a new artwork celebrating Aboriginal veterans at the intersection of Goodwood, Springbank and Daws Roads, following final approval from the City of Mitcham.

At its latest meeting, Council endorsed the implementation of proposals presented by Department for Infrastructure and Transport for the Tower Arts Centre land.

The artwork design features the word Mukapaanthi, or ‘remembrance’ in Kaurna, a ceremonial flame, and three figures depicting a traditional Kaurna warrior, World War One or Two soldier and a modern-day soldier, the Australian and Aboriginal flags.

The installation will be surrounded by native plantings, landscaped to form the shape of a Kaurna shield.

The artwork, produced with input from Aboriginal Veterans South Australia and Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation, will be placed on the south-west corner of the intersection near Springbank Secondary College.

The project is due to be completed next month.
