How do I become an Australian Citizen?

Australian Citizenship applications and enquiries should be directed to the Department of Home Affairs.

To become an Australian citizen, an application must first be lodged with the Department of Home Affairs. Application forms are available online at www.homeaffairs.gov.au. All applicants will be notified by the Department of Home Affairs of the outcome.

Once you have received your approval letter, the Department of Home Affairs will forward on an invitation to the next available ceremony in order of those approved. If you have the requirement for a rushed ceremony, your best option is to contact the Department of Home Affairs to establish if they are able to assist. Please send your email to this address with as much information as possible ceremony.sa@homeaffairs.gov.au.

When will Council host its next Ceremony?

City of Mitcham deliver Citizenship Ceremonies four times a year with the first one for the year held at City of Mitcham's Australia Day Celebration. Other ceremonies will be held:

  • Friday 5 April 2024 at the Cumberland Park Community Centre
  • Wednesday 31 July 2024 at Tiwu Kumungka
  • National Citizenship Day Tuesday 17 September 2024.  Please note the location will be confirmed soon.

If there is the requirement for you to finalise your citizenship journey prior to the above mentioned date, please make contact with the Department of Home Affairs, phone 131 880 or via this email address ceremony.sa@homeaffairs.gov.au

All Conferees will receive an invitation from the Department of Home Affairs via email with a link to register their attendance. Please ensure to RSVP prior to the date outlined in your invitation.

The wait time for a ceremony depends on the demand. Having family members linked to your application may also affect your wait time.

Find the number of approved applicants and wait times.

At present, only one guest per Conferee is allowed at each ceremony due to spacing restrictions. The Australia Day event may have differing rules to this, so please ensure to check your invitation for this information.
