How do I become an Australian Citizen?

Australian Citizenship applications and enquiries should be directed to the Department of Home Affairs.

To become an Australian citizen, an application must first be lodged with the Department of Home Affairs. Application forms are available online at All applicants will be notified by the Department of Home Affairs of the outcome.

When will Council host its next Ceremony?

City of Mitcham will be delivering our next Citizenship Ceremony at our Australia Day Celebration on Tuesday January 26, 2021 at St Marys Park.

All Conferees have received an invitation from the Department of Home Affairs via email with a link to register your attendance, please do so prior to the day.

Please feel free to bring family members and friends with you to celebrate your momentous occasion. They will be required to sign in with the QR Code or provide their details manually.

Please note that registration on the day is from 8:00am. You are required to bring your letter of invitation and a form of photo identification, such as a driver’s license or a passport.

10:00am   FREE barbecue and musical entertainment

Dress Code: Neat casual with traditional dress encouraged

For the safety of everyone attending please do not attend if:

  • you are feeling unwell or have any cold or flu like symptoms (even mild ones)
  • are awaiting the outcomes of a COVID-19 test
  • have returned from interstate or overseas in the past 14 days
  • are self-isolating or required to be in quarantine OR
  • have been in close contact with a person self-isolating or has tested positive to COVID-19.

You will be asked upon entry these above questions and will be required to provide your contact details for contact tracing purposes as per the requirements of SA Health.

If you are unable to make it to the ceremony, we will coordinate a virtual ceremony not long after this date to ensure you can still finalise your citizenship journey in a timely manner. Please do not put others at risk if you are unwell.
