The Full Council meets to discuss, debate and make decisions in the best interests of the wider community. Learn about how they make decisions, who are the members and when they meet.
Meet the Full Council
The Council is the main decision making body. Decisions of the Council are made through Full Council. All committees make recommendations to Full Council for determination. Informed decision making is critical to ensuring that decisions are made in the best interests of the wider community.
The terms of reference are set out in the Local Government Act 1999.
When they meet
The Council meets at 7pm on the second Tuesday of each month.
Informed decision making is critical to ensuring that decisions are made in the best interests of the wider community. Therefore, if an issue is considered to be significant and complex, the matter may be presented to Council more than once to ensure the community has the opportunity to engage with Council Members prior to a decision being made.
The methods undertaken are:
- The matter is presented to Council at a briefing prior to a report being considered at the Full Council meeting for decision, or
- An information paper which does not require a resolution, signalling the opportunity to suspend proceedings to enable presentations and discussion during a Full Council meeting, will be included on a Council Agenda prior to the item being presented to a Full Council meeting for a decision.

How to participate
With the written permission of the Mayor, a member of the public can address the Council or a Committee personally or on behalf of a group of residents, on any item relevant to the Council or that Committee.
if you wish to make a deputation please email your request to deputations@mitchamcouncil.sa.gov.au.
There is also a gallery question time at Council meetings where the public is able to ask questions of the Council.
If you or a group of people are concerned about a particular matter and would like to bring it to the attention of the Council, you may wish to submit a petition.
A petition is a document containing the names, signatures and addresses of a group of people who support the cause which is the subject of the petition.
Once the petition has been received it will be presented to Council for consideration and the Head Petitioner will be advised of Council's decision.
Please note: if you sign a petition your name and address may be made public.
The petition must:
- be legibly written, typed or printed
- clearly set out at the top of each page containing signatures, the request or submission of the petitioners
- show the printed name of each person, their signature and address
- be addressed to the Council and delivered to 131 Belair Road, Torrens Park SA 5062
Electronic petitions will be accepted provided they show the name of each person, their suburb/postcode and email address. Pages or names which do not meet this format will not be counted by Council when considering the petition.
A covering letter should be provided with the name, address and contact details of the person to whom Council can address correspondence.
The original of each page of the petition must be provided to the Council.
When a petition is received, a copy is sent to Council Members and a cover page summarising the petition is included in the agenda for the next Council Meeting for consideration of the matter and the course of action to be taken.
Members of the public can contact Council Members to discuss any issue relevant to the Council.
