Thank you for Celebrating Christmas with us!
It was so wonderful to see our community come together to celebrate after such a tumultuous year, we hope it brought joy to you and your family.
Mitcham's Christmas Festival was organised as an alternative to the annual Carols at Kingswood Oval event that was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Three Christmas Celebration Spaces were set up at CC Hood Reserve, Panorama, Waite Street Reserve, Blackwood, and Soldiers Memorial Gardens at Mitcham Memorial Library.
Decked out in lights, and decorations created by our local schools and community groups, the spaces hosted pop-up performances including a brass band, carols, dance and ukulele performances, Australian stories and songs and children’s entertainment.
As well as lighting up our Christmas Celebration Spaces, Council buildings including the Mitcham Community Centre, Mitcham Cultural Village, Blackwood Community Centre and Cumberland Park Community Centre featured light displays, while a fence art installation was installed at Hawthorndene Oval using recycled materials.
The festival also hosted a Christmas Craft Carnival across Mitcham Cultural Village, Blackwood Community Centre, Mitcham Memorial Library and Cumberland Park Community Centre, as well as nature walks and geocaching at CC Hood Reserve.
City of Mitcham’s Community Wellbeing program’s ‘Colour Group’ and ‘Cumbie Crew’ worked on a banner and knitted bows and wreaths to decorate our Community Centres and Christmas Celebration Spaces.
A Christmas Lights Trail Map was created to showcase the best streets and suburbs to visit.
At our libraries, kids were invited to write a letter to Santa and to attend a magical Christmas Night Time Story Time.
Mayor Dr Heather Holmes-Ross said after a difficult year, the festival had been welcomed by many in the community.
“It was wonderful to see how people embraced our festival, particularly our local schools and community groups who helped create our displays,” she said. “Thank you to everyone who got involved for helping us celebrate the end the year and welcome 2021.”
