The suburb was named after Mitcham in Surrey, England, the birthplace of the manager of the South Australian Company, William Giles.
Established in 1840, Mitcham Village still retains much of its original colonial architecture. It is one of the oldest European settlements in the State. The area has a number of opportunities for exploring the heritage of the area.
Mitcham Village Institute
Part of Mitcham Village, the Institute was built in 1870, and extended in the early 1900's. The Mitcham Village Arts and Crafts Centre adjoins the Institute.
