Learn about our sustainable city goals, the projects we’re working on to get there, and how we’re making changes at Council to reduce our corporate carbon footprint.

Our goal is to create a sustainable city – and lead by example

We’re proud to have taken action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through initiatives like:

  • Reducing waste to landfill from council facilities
  • Upgrading corporate facilities so that they’re more energy efficient
  • Installing solar panels at council facilities
  • Upgrading residential street lights to LEDs

Our planned projects

In October 2019, we declared a climate emergency. We want to lead our community in addressing climate change, so we’re taking action to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions through these projects:

Sustainable and smart city

We’re changing all of our city’s streetlights to energy efficient technology by 2030.

Waste management

We’re setting targets and funding programs to reduce our commercial and domestic waste to landfill by 75%.

Procurement

Our sustainable procurement policies mean we choose low emission products and services and incorporate low emission design into all of our new buildings.

Renewable energy

From 2023, we’re buying 100% of our energy from renewable sources. We’re also investigating how we can store excess solar energy in batteries.

Building design

We’re upgrading buildings we lease and own to become more energy efficient.

Transport

We’re replacing our light fleet vehicles with electric vehicles by 2030. We currently have 11 electric vehicles with more planned.

Tree planting

We are planting more trees across Mitcham's suburbs and are recognised as a Tree City of the World.

Water sensitive urban design

We are investing in smart water design, which includes water sensitive urban design projects, initiatives, and research to cool and green our community.

Resilient South - Climate Ready Southern Adelaide

We are working with the Cities of Onkaparinga, Holdfast Bay and Marion to strengthen the southern Adelaide region so that our communities, businesses and environments can bounce back from the challenges of climate change.

Resilient South Climate Action Plan

Resilient South has prepared a Regional Climate Action Plan to provide strategic direction for the four councils to adapt to a changing climate and further reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The action plan focuses on what the Cities of Mitcham, Holdfast Bay, Marion and Onkaparinga and the South Australian Government will do together, including how we can support and partner with others to progress change. It will build on our success over the past decade and provide a platform to nurture the relationships we have formed and develop new partnerships to benefit our region.

Resilient Asset Management Project

The Resilient Asset Management Project (RAMP) is improving the resilience of our communities to the risks posed by climate change by integrating climate risk into our asset management processes.
