Waste & Recycling

We can no longer rely on sending all our waste to landfill, especially when there are a lot of valuable materials that can be reused and recycled. As individuals and as a community we need to be more responsible of our consumption of materials and how we dispose of them. After all, waste generation and disposal has significant environmental, economic and social impacts.

In response, the City of Mitcham has developed a Waste Management Strategy to demonstrate its commitment to reducing waste to landfill, increasing resource recovery and increasing community knowledge of responsible waste management.

Why Waste It? Education Program

why waste it brand

The ‘Why Waste It?’ education program being delivered in partnership with East Waste aims to raise awareness in our community of a better alternative to ‘wasting it’ by avoiding, reducing, reusing, recycling and composting your waste and unwanted materials.

A new website site whichbin.com.au is now live and is a great source of information on diverting waste and unwanted materials from landfill. There is a comprehensive A-Z guide listing over 400 common household items to help identify which items go in ‘which bin’ and which items can be reused and recycled.

There are also educational resources available to download including flyers, posters and a printable listing of the A-Z guide.

Continue to watch this space as we encourage the community to think ‘Why Waste It?’
