Mitcham Remembers

On Saturday 11 November 2017 your community and three local RSL's honoured those that had fallen in a special Remembrance Day commemoration and also heard about some of the lesser known stories of our district's history.

On Friday 10 November 2017 an invitation for a camp sleep out for only children was held recreating the army style training village. children had conversations with older community members and children heard about our history, letter writing, poppy wreath making, learnt about the light horses and also what it was like sleeping in a traditional army tent.

This event was held to hear the special stories surrounding the 33,000 soldiers who trained at the Mitcham Camp during WW1, to the 21 Australian nurses who lost their lives in the line of duty on Bangka Island. Community activities at this event included:

  • Clean a saddle and groom a light horse
  • Hear a vintage radio programme
  • Walk through a bell tent showing life in an army camp
  • Climb into an army tank
  • Partake in a training drill
  • Discover Mitcham’s early cider makers and ice manufacturer
  • Experience a smoking ceremony
  • Old fashioned family tug of war
