You have three options for disposing of garden organic waste in the City of Mitcham:

  1. Recycle garden waste using your green bin (don't forget you can also include your food scraps)
  2. Set up a compost bin or worm farm
  3. Take your garden waste to the Lynton Green Organics Drop-off Facility read on.

About the Lynton Green Organics Drop-off Facility

You can get rid of garden organic waste at the Lynton Green Organics Drop-off Facility.

Located on Beagle Terrace in Lynton, the facility is open 8am to 2pm on the first, third, and fifth Saturday of each month (excluding public holidays) as well as on some Mondays throughout the bushfire season.

This service is only available for City of Mitcham residents who maintain their own properties and not to commercial operators with larger vehicles or trucks. We don’t accept trucks.

You’ll be charged a fee for disposal, except on the free days below and indicated in orange on the calendar.

Lynton Green Organics Drop-off Facility is closed on extreme and catastrophic fire days

Lynton Green Organics Drop-off Facility is located within the Higher Fire Risk Area and will be closed when Extreme and Catastrophic fire danger ratings are issued by the South Australian Country Fire Service (CFS) for the Mount Lofty Ranges Fire District.

Please check with the CFS for the current fire danger rating. We may close the facility in the event of extreme weather, so please check the front page of our website and our social media to make sure the facility is open before you visit.

The Lynton Green Organics Drop-off Facility is located in a compound shared with the SES at the end of Beagle Terrace, Lynton and doesn’t have a street number.

The Lynton Green Organics Drop-off Facility is scheduled to be open from 8am to 2pm on the first, third and fifth Saturday of each month (excluding public holidays) as shown in green on the calendar above. The facility is located within the Higher Fire Risk Area, which may affect opening hours.

Fees for disposal apply according to the size of the load. Please see the chart below for more information on fees. We accept EFTPOS/credit cards or cash, and you’ll need to bring some proof of being a resident of the City of Mitcham, like a drivers licence or rates notice.

We also offer City of Mitcham residents 12 free open days to dispose of combustible garden waste from their properties during each Fire Danger Season. This includes 10 free days throughout October, November and December, so you can prepare for the Fire Danger Season, and two free days in January and February to maintain your properties during the season (shown in orange on the calendar above).

To use the facility, you’ll need to bring proof that you live in the City of Mitcham, such as your drivers licence or rates notice. The facility isn’t open to commercial operators.

The facility can get really busy, so give yourself a good amount of time, and wear the right clothing for the weather.

The garden organic waste collected is transported to a commercial composting contractor and turned into mulch. On average, we receive over 600 tonnes of garden organics each year. This is a remarkable achievement of City of Mitcham residents.

In addition to the Lynton facility, you can also dispose of smaller amounts of garden organics by setting up a compost bin at home or using a green bin, which is collected once a fortnight from your kerbside.
