Roadworks

To improve the safety of our roads, we run seal preservation and road resurfacing programs every year. Seal preservation prolongs a road's life, while resurfacing occurs at the end of its life.

What works we do

Road resurfacing: We remove the existing road and relay it with new asphalt.

Seal preservation: We paint the road with a black bitumen-based product, which helps to protect against water and sunlight damage.

Vehicle bridges: We regularly assess, maintain and upgrade road bridges. Upgrading road bridges are rare but have a large impact, as the old bridge needs to be closed for works to happen.

How will you know if works are planned?

If you’re directly affected by the works, we’ll send you a letter with information about what work is planned, when and where the works are happening, as well as who you can get in touch with if you have questions.

You’ll receive this letter just before the work starts. If you believe there’s work happening in your area that impacts you and haven’t received a letter, give us a call on 1300 133 466.

How do we keep the community safe?

We do our best to limit construction work between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday. While we always strive to minimise the impact that roadworks has on the community, sometimes we may need to:

  • Close the road during the roadworks
  • Limit access to properties for short periods of time
  • Use noisy equipment and machines

If construction is happening on your street, it’s important to remember that this is a work site.  Take care, and listen to construction crews.

Frequently asked questions

We work with our contractors to coordinate waste collection around construction works, but sometimes bins may be missed. Leave your bin out and we’ll do our best to pick it up the next day. If this doesn’t happen, give us a call on 1300 133 466.

We regularly inspect kerbs and fix sections of kerb that are preventing water flow along the street.

Request kerb or gutter maintenance

Our contractors use horns to guide the trucks on the worksite. This is to ensure the safety of the workers. Our contractor looked into other methods and even though it is disruptive, horn blowing is still the safest method.

Once the contractors have left the site for the day, the road will be open to the public and able to be driven on.

Yes you will have access in and out of your driveway during the works. There may be at times a slight delay while we  ensure the road is safe.

When cars are parked on the road they can create a safety hazard and reduce the quality of the road surface.

Roads are resurfaced to maintain the highest standards in road quality. As roads age, cracks appear and allow water to get in under the asphalt, damaging the road.

You should have received a letter with the dates we will be working in your street. Resurfacing roads usually takes a single day however this depends on the type of road.

Street sweeping

Street sweeping not only keeps our streets looking good; it also keeps waste and debris out of our storm water system.

What works we do

Our street sweeping trucks drive by your street approximately every five to ten weeks to keep the gutters clean. This helps keep our streets looking clean and tidy, and protects our environment by removing leaf litter and debris before they enter the stormwater system. It also reduces the chance of flooding.

  • Every year, we collect an average of 1,300 tonnes of waste from our streets
  • The street sweepers cover approximately 900km across the City
  • We run seasonal programs when there’s increased leaf and berry fall. During this time, an extra sweeper and staff member using a hand blower will clear footpaths and verges
  • At times, the weather can slow us down. Extremely hot weather can result in an increase in trees dropping their leaves, which can slow our sweepers down
  • Our sweepers also have to stop when they come across leaves that have been placed into piles. While we appreciate the efforts of residents to pile leaf litter, our street sweepers can’t pick up these piles. Leaving the leaf litter spread in the gutter helps keep our sweepers moving

Autumn leaf street sweeping program

The Autumn leaf street sweeping program focuses on streets lined with deciduous trees. We aim to blow and sweep leaves on these roads and footpaths on a fortnightly basis for a ten week period, usually between the months of April to June. Delays in sweeping may be experienced due to weather and higher leaf falls.

White Cedar street sweeping program

The White Cedar street sweeping program focuses on streets lined with trees that drop an excessive amount of berries. We aim to blow and sweep leaves on these roads and footpaths on a fortnightly basis for an eight week period, usually between mid-September and mid-October. Delays in sweeping may be experienced due to weather and higher leaf falls.

Summer leaf street sweeping program

The Summer leaf street sweeping program focuses on streets lined with trees that produce excessive leaf fall. We aim to blow and sweep leaves on these roads and footpaths on a fortnightly basis for a ten week period, typically between the months of December to February. Delays in sweeping may be experienced due to weather and higher leaf falls.
