The unique character of Melrose Park is captured in a new mural by abstract artist Matthew Fortrose.

Marion Street Reserve Mural

Artist: Matthew Fortrose
Council contributed: $9,800, plus GST
Location: Melrose Park
Installed: 2025

The unique character of Melrose Park is captured in a new mural by abstract artist Matthew Fortrose.

Supported by a City of Mitcham public art grant, the mural is installed on a 13-metre wall on Marion Street Reserve at the corner of Marion and Stephen Street behind a basketball court and playground.

The work draws inspiration from the local industrial precinct and residential homes.

“I wanted to respond to those attributes of Melrose Park, creating a work that looks to the history of manufacturing in the area alongside a mix of heritage and modern homes,” Matt says. “I have used high impact colours, striking pattern work and a sense of movement to match the activity happening in the park.”

Matt has been active for over a decade and regularly receives commissions in South Australia and nationally. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally as part of group exhibitions.

Funded by a City of Mitcham Public Art Grant.
