The Building Fire Safety Committee ensures that the level of fire safety within existing buildings within the Mitcham Council area is maintained to a satisfactory level, safeguarding the community and property.

The Building Fire Safety Committee consists of qualified Council staff with building surveying qualifications and expertise in the area of fire safety, along with representatives from the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service and Country Fire Service. The committee meets monthly to conduct inspections and plays an important role in helping to ensure that existing buildings maintain an adequate level of fire safety for occupants and visitors.

The Committee focuses on buildings where people may be particularly vulnerable in an emergency, including aged care facilities, schools, childcare centres, churches and supported accommodation. It also considers fire safety in a broad range of other buildings, such as offices, community facilities, retail premises, assembly buildings and other public buildings where people live, work, learn or gather. Through inspections and assessment of fire safety measures, the Committee helps to identify potential fire safety risks and works with building owners to ensure appropriate standards of fire protection are maintained.

Concerns about building fire safety risks can be reported via email at development@mitchamcouncil.sa.gov.au or by calling the duty Building Surveyor on 1300 133 466.
