Big Map Exercise helps strengthen bushfire preparedness
In partnership with Disaster Relief Australia, we recently hosted an interactive Big Map Exercise to boost our local disaster planning and strengthen emergency resilience across the City of Mitcham.
This session was made possible through funding from the National Emergency Management Agency under the Protecting Our Communities federal grant program.
The Big Map Exercise brought together local emergency services, community leaders and other key stakeholders to explore how we respond to bushfires and other emergencies. Using a giant 12m x 9m aerial map of our council area, participants were able to:
- Identify community assets and potential vulnerabilities
- Explore how different parts of the community might be impacted
- Share ideas and experiences to improve emergency coordination
By working side-by-side, attendees gained valuable insights into emergency planning, disaster response and how to better support our community in times of crisis.
