What to expect when using our justice of the peace services

Here’s what to expect:

  • Identification: Please bring a form of photographic identification, such as a driver’s licence, proof of age card, or passport.
  • Document check: The JP will confirm that your document can be processed by them. Some documents, particularly those related to international requirements, may need a Notary Public instead.
  • Understanding and consent: The JP will ensure you fully understand the document you are signing, its significance, and that you are signing voluntarily.
  • Accessibility support: If needed, an interpreter or additional support can be arranged for individuals with reading or other difficulties/disabilities.
  • Affidavits and statutory declarations:
    • For affidavits, you will be asked to swear or affirm the truth of the document’s contents.
    • For statutory declarations, you will make an oral declaration in the JP’s presence.
  • Advance Care Directives can take extra time. These documents often involve multiple pages that need to be signed and initialled correctly. Please allow up to 20 minutes for this process so your JP has time to complete everything accurately.

If you can’t visit us during these times you can find a Justice of the Peace here.
