A feel for nature

The Mitcham Felters are set to exhibit a range of two- and three-dimensional works under the theme ‘Nature’s Palette’ as part of this year’s SALA Festival.

From wall art to jackets, coats and scarves, felting can be used to create a variety of unique pieces.

Secretary Ros Hunt says felting – created by layers of wool, mixed with soap, water and ‘friction’, embellished with other textiles – is a hands-on art form.

“You can be quite creative and it’s also very tactile; you’re really connected to your material,” she says. “You need to be able to feel the fibres to work out when you’ve reached the right point.

“It’s lovely to be able to be in the workshop exploring together and gaining inspiration from each other.”

Established 20 years ago, The Mitcham Felters meet on the second and fourth Saturday of the month at Gallery One in the Mitcham Cultural Village. A beginner’s group meets on the third Saturday of the month.

The Nature’s Palette SALA exhibition is on at Tiwu Kumangka, 2-4 Young Street, Blackwood, during August.
