Arbor Day Tree Giveaway now open
From macadamias and lilly pillies to native frangipanis, there are a range of trees that qualify for Mitcham’s Arbor Day Tree Giveaway.
As part of the annual giveaway that kicks off this month, City of Mitcham residents are invited to register to go in the draw for a $50 tree voucher to be redeemed at State Flora Nursery, Belair, or Adelaide Advanced Trees, Cherry Gardens.
Tree species must be a long-lived species (at least 25 years) that can grow to at least four metres’ height at maturity and a species that provides shade when the sun is at its highest point.
Residents can opt for an established young tree or multiple tubestock to grow in their gardens, helping cool and green our city.
State Flora Retail Nursery Coordinator Scott Maxted said there were plenty of options available at the nursery located within Belair National Park.
“You’re welcome to visit us and talk to staff – we are happy to help and discuss what might work for your garden,” he said. “Natives provide food and shelter for wildlife and are generally more drought tolerant than European plants, and they can look great all year round.”
As well as larger eucalypts including Grey Box and River Red Gums, there are a range of compact flowering gums suitable for smaller gardens. Trees that can add colour and form to a garden include River Wattle, Lemon Myrtle, Agonis Afterdark, Queensland Brush Box, banksias and bottlebrush.
Applications are due by Friday 10 July 2026 and are restricted to one per household.
