City of Mitcham has awarded a Key to the City to body image activist and 2023 Australian of the Year Taryn Brumfitt.
A Cumberland Park resident, Taryn founded the Body Image Movement in 2012 with the aim of teaching people to love and appreciate their bodies.
She released a documentary in 2016 (Embrace), followed by Embrace Kids aimed at nine-to-14 year olds and has published four best-selling books.
Taryn also created the Embrace Hub, a free resource for parents, children, teachers and communities that aims to foster body positivity.
City of Mitcham Mayor Dr Heather Holmes-Ross congratulated Taryn on receiving the city’s third Key to the City award.
“Taryn’s work around positive body image is incredibly important in reducing the effects of the multi-million-dollar global industry based on striving for unattainable body shapes and sizes,” Mayor Holmes-Ross said. “We’re so proud of her commitment to the wellbeing of all members of our community.”
Taryn was presented the award at a Citizenship Ceremony at Cumberland Park on Friday 5 April.
City of Mitcham awarded a Key to the City to Professor Nicola Spurrier PSM and Commissioner Grant Stevens APM in 2022.
