City of Mitcham volunteers recognised
City of Mitcham celebrated its volunteers with a morning tea and movie at Wallis Cinemas Mitcham during National Volunteer Week.
This year’s theme, Your Year to Volunteer, honours the contribution of volunteers across the country and invites everyone to discover how giving their time and talents can create connection, purpose and stronger communities.
2026 is the United Nations International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development, recognising the vital role volunteers play in building sustainable, inclusive communities.
Acting General Manager Community and Organisational Services Luke Harris paid tribute to City of Mitcham’s 350 volunteers who support the city’s libraries, community centres, events, community bus, local history, gardens, reserves, wetlands, toy libraries and community programs.
“Some of that work is very visible and some happens quietly in the background, but it all matters,” he said. “You help people feel welcome, you help people stay connected, you support services that many in our community rely on. Very often you bring not only your time but your patience, kindness, knowledge, and good humour.”
