E-bike rebate now available

City of Mitcham has expanded its Sustainable Living Subsidy Program to include rebates on electric and cargo bikes, rainwater tanks, worm farms and more.

Launched in 2024, the Program aims to encourage the community to live more sustainably and reduce waste by subsidising the upfront costs of reusable and green products.

A rebate of up to $200 is available to subsidise the cost of an e-bike, e-cargo or cargo bike. Rebates of 50 per cent, capped at $150, are available for rainwater tanks; $50 for insect hotels, worm farms or bokashi kits, nest boxes, compost bins and indigenous plants. Other products eligible for rebates include modern cloth nappies and reusable menstrual and incontinence products (50 per cent, capped at $50).

Torrens Park resident Claire Pocock has welcomed the subsidy and hopes it will encourage others to consider buying a cargo or electric bike. She purchased an e-cargo bike three years ago and has clocked up 6,600km riding to work in the city, dropping her kids to school on the way. “I thought I would just use it for weekends but now I ride every day because it’s much better than the bus or train,” she says. “We love it – it’s outside, the wind is in your hair and it’s total freedom.”
