Marion Riding Club committee member Helen Whittle has been recognised in the Good Sports Volunteer of the Year Awards.

A long-serving member of the equestrian club based at Shepherds Hill Recreation Park, Helen was named Runner-Up in the South Australian category for her contribution to the sport and the community.

Presenting her award, Member for Waite Catherine Hutchesson MP paid tribute to Helen for helping ensure the club remained a thriving place for equestrians in Adelaide to learn, train and compete and maintaining access to trails within the park.

“When the club faced significant challenges during COVID, Helen stepped up, reconnecting past members, rallying support, helping secure grants, advocating tirelessly and playing a pivotal role in ensuring the club’s future,” she said. “Congratulations Helen on your years of dedication and service to the equestrian community.”

As well as helping with administration, Helen mentors riders, trains officials and champions opportunities for young equestrians.

She is a Life Member of Horse SA, an Equestrian Australia A Level Judge, Judge Educator and Para Equestrian Judge and has also been recognised as Equestrian SA’s Para Official of the Year.

Supported by a City of Mitcham Maggy Ragless Memorial Grant in 2024, Helen wrote and published a book documenting the history of the club since 1960, its connection to the SA Mounted Police and its contribution to the Australian equestrian community as the foundation training hub for the likes of dual Olympic gold medallist Gillian Rolton.
