Energy entrepreneur Saul Griffith called on South Australians to take ‘five steps’ to make the switch to all-electric homes and vehicles at a community event at Tiwu Kumangka, Blackwood.

Launching his book ‘Plug In!’, Saul spoke about the growing appetite for electrification and practical pathways to achieve it fairly and efficiently.

“I want you to make roughly five good decisions over the next decade,” he said. “Don’t feel bad if you drove here in an electric car – just don’t buy another one when it dies. Whether it’s your car, your stove, your water heater, your space heater and where you buy your electricity from – just make those five decisions to reduce your emissions.”

The sold-out event brought together representatives from Electrify Adelaide, Rewiring Australia and the Australian Electric Vehicle Association along with volunteers from Blackwood Environment Centre.

Speaking as part of a panel, City of Mitcham Mayor Dr Heather Holmes Ross spoke about the success of Mitcham’s Community Renewables Program.

“We’ve taken the guesswork out of putting solar and batteries on people’s roofs,” she said. “We’ve had 1,200 residents sign up to this program, and of those approximately 95 per cent have batteries and have joined a virtual power plant. Four other council areas now have their own program, which is fantastic."
