Friends ready to roll for a good cause

Two friends from Blackwood are preparing to hit the road next month (August), driving from Adelaide to Darwin in a $1500 Toyota Tarago family van.

Ryan Midgley and James Thompson are gearing up to drive in this year’s Shitbox Rally – Adelaide to Darwin to raise money for the Cancer Council.

Their team, Barely Rolling, aims to raise a minimum of $5,000 to support research, prevention and families affected by cancer, with an aspirational goal of $10,000.

They kicked off their campaign in March with help from Belair graffiti artist Zac Kingston who spent a day at the site of the former Blackwood Library transforming the car with ‘Barely Rolling’ artwork.

“We found Zac through the Blackwood Buzz Facebook page – we put a call-out for a local artist, and his Mum saw it,” Ryan says. “He’s done a fantastic job with the artwork.”

They’ve enjoyed support from local businesses including Tyres and More Blackwood who donated two new front tyres, as well as fundraising support from Care 24/7 and Altaira Nursing Agency, Tindal Air and Everyday Green.

“We’re going to be driving across some of Australia’s toughest and most remote roads in the name of a cause that matters deeply,” Ryan says. “This event has raised over $60 million for the Cancer Council, supporting really important research that we are privileged to support. Every donation - big or small - pushes us closer to the start line and closer to making a real impact.”
