A project to upgrade the Gil Langley Building at Mortlock Park is now under way.
The $4.535 million project is funded by the Federal Government ($900,000), State Government ($2.1 million) and City of Mitcham ($1.434 million), along with the Colonel Light Gardens Football Club ($50,000) and Goodwood Baseball Club ($50,000).
The upgrade will include four unisex changerooms, an umpires’ changeroom, accessible toilets and a medical or trainers’ room. It will also include a new canteen, storage areas, two batting tunnels, an extended balcony, new carpet and internal painting.
City of Mitcham Mayor Dr Heather Holmes-Ross said the project would pave the way for more women and girls to be involved in sport and had been years in the making.
“Located in a heritage listed suburb, it has required extensive planning, coordination and care to ensure we honoured the character of the area and balanced the needs of our local residents and sporting club community,” Dr Holmes-Ross said. “This has been a long-standing priority for Council, and today we celebrate a significant achievement in delivering on that commitment.”
In 2023 the City of Mitcham undertook a comprehensive community consultation, including an online survey that received over 600 responses, three pop-up engagement sessions and the formation of a dedicated community advisory group.
