Mitcham announces landmark development in Blackwood centre
The City of Mitcham has announced the sale of the former Blackwood Library and adjoining nursery site on Main Road, paving the way for a landmark mixed-use development in the heart of Blackwood.
Following a competitive expression of interest process and substantial negotiations, South Australian based building and property development group, Buildtec have been selected by Council as the successful purchaser.
Buildtec’s innovative proposal stood out for its potential to transform the Blackwood Centre with a vibrant mixed-use development. This milestone project marks a significant step in realising Council’s vision for a revitalised and thriving community and business hub.
The proposed development is a high-quality, sustainable design that reflects the unique character of Blackwood, which includes:
- Two conjoined multi-storey mixed-use buildings
- A vibrant Main Road frontage featuring ground floor commercial tenancies.
- Upper-level residential apartments, offering a range of options, including affordable housing.
Importantly, Buildtec have committed to begin construction within 12 months and complete the development within three years.
Mayor Dr Heather Holmes-Ross said “This development represents a pivotal moment for the Blackwood community and the City of Mitcham. Buildtec’s proposal reflects our strategic vision to create a vibrant, accessible and walkable town centre with diverse housing and business opportunities.
Council has been working to revitalise the Blackwood town centre through a series of strategic investments, including the development of Tiwu Kumangka, upgrades to Waite Street Reserve and Young Street, RAA electric vehicle charging stations and the facilitation of the new north-south pedestrian link. Together, these projects have created a strong foundation for this next stage of Blackwood's transformation.
The decision to partner with Buildtec reflects Council’s commitment to increase housing diversity and encourage further investment in sustainable urban development in the Blackwood Centre. The proposal exceeds financial expectations while delivering a design that ensures long-term value for the Blackwood community.
“This project highlights the potential for high-quality apartment living in Blackwood with a strong connection to the local community,” Mayor Dr Heather Holmes-Ross added. “The inclusion of affordable housing and the activation of Main Road will enrich the area for both residents and visitors.”
Buildtec’s impressive portfolio, including projects like Norwood Green, 354 Bowden and Gilberton Lofts, underscores their capability to deliver outstanding results. The City of Mitcham is confident that this partnership will serve as a benchmark for future developments in the area.
The sale follows Council's decision to redevelop the strategically located site to support housing diversity, economic growth and the revitalisation of the Blackwood town centre.
