City of Mitcham welcomed its newest citizens and celebrated grants recipients on National Citizenship Day.

City of Mitcham welcomed 80 new citizens at a Citizenship Ceremony at Tiwu Kumangka, Blackwood, on National Citizenship Day.

The City also recognised its grant recipients and highlighted some of their projects, from community gardens and theatre to cooking and art classes, sporting events and facility upgrades.

Mayor Dr Heather Holmes-Ross said in the past 12 months, the City had welcomed 210 new citizens from 29 countries.

“Today is a day to reflect on the meaning of Australian citizenship, and the privileges it offers, and the responsibilities that come with it,” Mayor Holmes-Ross said. “The day encourages all Australians to celebrate the bonds of a shared national identity.”

Citizens were presented a jar of indigenous jam representing Australia’s Traditional Owners, a Unity pin symbolising a commitment to a brighter future for all Australians, a letter of welcome from Colonel Light Gardens Primary School Year 4 students and a native Australian seedling.

Over the last 12 months, City of Mitcham’s grants program has provided $315,000 to members of our community across a range of categories including Civic Participation and Leadership Awards, Community Facilities Grants, the Maggy Ragless Memorial Grant, My Mitcham Community Grants, Public Art Grants, Quick Response Grants and Multi-year Grants.
