St Columba's Inclusive Service
St Columba’s Anglican Church at Hawthorn is set to trial a Neurodivergent Inclusive Service this month.
Reverend Warren Huffa said the service was open to anyone including those with sensory needs and would include modifications to lighting and sound.
It will provide a calming environment with breakout spaces and quiet activities and the freedom to move during the service.
“The service is intended to be sensitive to and accepting of those who many benefit from a more relaxed environment,” he said. “The aim is to eliminate surprise and reduce anxiety levels, making this service more welcoming for some people.”
Children’s and Outreach Worker Julie Ascher-Ellis says there is a growing awareness and acceptance of the needs of neurodivergent families and individuals.
Families are invited to bring their own support equipment, noise reduction headphones and sensory tools. After the service refreshments and a light tea will be available. Families are welcome to bring their own food if preferred. The service will be held on Sunday 29 March at 4.30pm at St Columba’s Anglican Church, 2 Rosevear Street, Hawthorn.
