Trial aims for safer streets
City of Mitcham is set to trial AI-assisted technology to see how it can help improve parking management, safety and planning across the community.
The Aero Ranger system uses cameras mounted on a council vehicle to identify potential parking issues, such as overstays or vehicles parked incorrectly.
City of Mitcham Mayor Dr Heather Holmes-Ross said the technology would not replace council officers and would not automatically issue fines.
“Authorised officers will review each case before any action is taken,” she said. “The system simply flags potential issues, which are then checked by an officer.”
Dr Holmes-Ross said officers would remain highly visible in the community through foot patrols, providing education, answering questions and supporting compliance rather than relying on technology alone.
The pilot would allow Council to better understand parking patterns, turnover and demand.
“This data can help inform future planning, improve safety in high‑risk areas, and support better place‑based decisions,” she said. “We will continue to keep residents informed as the trial progresses and welcome community feedback along the way.”
