Work is set to begin on the upgrade of Young Street as part of a project to rejuvenate the heart of Blackwood.
A section of Young Street from Waite Street to Main Road will be upgraded to create a pedestrian-friendly, welcoming area next to Tiwu Kumangka, home of the Blackwood Library and Community Centre.
The upgrade will include:
- A section of raised road pavement zone to calm traffic and create a pedestrian-friendly zone
- New landscaping with garden beds and trees to enhance the street’s natural character
- Renewed road surfacing and upgraded footpaths on both sides of Young Street
- Upgraded electrical infrastructure including undergrounding of powerlines and power to facilitate community events
- Additional parking to support local businesses and visitors
- A new roundabout at the intersection of Young Street and Waite Street to provide safe traffic movement funded through the Federal Government Blackspot Program
City of Mitcham Mayor Dr Heather Holmes-Ross said the project was an exciting step in plans to create a vibrant community precinct in Blackwood.
“This upgrade will enhance the area’s accessibility, safety and visual appeal, and is designed to foster a stronger sense of place and community connection,” Dr Holmes-Ross said. “These improvements are a critical part of our broader vision to support active transport, community activation, local business growth and vibrancy of the precinct.”
The project is set to begin by the end of July and be completed by mid-December.
The redevelopment of Young Street and upgrade of Waite Street Reserve are supported by a $1.6 million Commonwealth Government Investing in Our Communities grant, matched by support from City of Mitcham and a $400,000 grant from the Government of South Australia’s Planning and Development Fund.
