Local History Service

The local history service was established by the City of Mitcham in 1986 to preserve and promote the history and heritage of the Mitcham district. Located at the Mitcham Heritage Research Centre within the Mitcham Cultural Village, the local history service is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the history of City of Mitcham.

Knowledgeable staff and volunteers are available to assist you with personal and curriculum based research, guided tours and history related events.

If you are a school or a community group please contact the Local History Coordinator regarding talks or guided tours tailored to meet your particular interests.

Local History Collection

The Local History Collection has been created to collect, collate, catalogue and store information concerning the City of Mitcham to archival standards. The collection consists of historical information about any aspect of the City of Mitcham. It is predominately paper-based and includes:

  • Publications (biographies, histories, etc)
  • Directories and electoral rolls
  • Historical research files
  • Local newspapers
  • Maps and plans
  • Local Cemetery records and indexes
  • Old council minutes, correspondence, reports and indexes
  • Over 4000 photographs including special collections
  • Rate assessments, Council surveys and building applications
  • Local school and organisations’ records and histories
  • Family histories including letters and diaries
  • Oral histories

The Local History Collection is open to the public and can be accessed from the Local History Service located at the Mitcham Heritage Research Centre during opening hours.
