We’re creating a cleaner, smarter energy future and your club can be part of it.

We're taking an exciting step toward sustainability by installing solar panels and batteries across as many Council buildings as possible including those used by local sports and community clubs.

Our goal is to create one big virtual solar power plant that powers Council buildings, streetlights and more with clean, renewable energy.

If your club or group operates from a Council building, you may be eligible to take part in this initiative and join our Green Energy Plan.

How it works

If your building is suitable, we’ll install solar panels and a battery system at no cost to you. You’ll then have the option to join the Green Energy Plan a voluntary, 10-year agreement that locks in your energy costs at a rate 20% lower than your last annual bill.

That amount stays fixed for the full 10 years, with only CPI increases.

By joining the plan, you’ll be helping us:

  • Reduce emissions and create long-term environmental benefits
  • Protect clubs like yours from unpredictable energy prices
  • Build a stronger, more connected energy system across our city

What’s included:

  • Solar and battery installation which is all managed and maintained by Council
  • Fixed energy contributions with no fluctuating power bills for 10 years
  • Energy price stability and contributions only rise with CPI
  • No more energy admin as we take care of the contracts
  • Access to our Virtual Power Plant and  your building becomes part of a larger energy network
  • Cost savings to allow you to enjoy lower energy costs with no surprises

Who can join?

If your club is based in a Council building that’s suitable for solar, you may be eligible to join. Joining is completely optional but only participating buildings will receive the solar installation.

If your club is based in a Council building:

  1. We’ll reach out to meet with you and share more about the plan
  2. You’ll receive an estimate of your fixed annual contribution
  3. Discuss the plan with your committee
  4. Let us know your decision
  5. We’ll work with you to schedule the solar installation

Sturt Lions kick off the plan

The Sturt Lions Football Club at Eden Hills is the first club to sign up to City of Mitcham’s Green Energy Plan, paving the way for cost and energy savings.

Under the plan, Council will install solar panels and batteries at the Lions’ clubrooms at Karinya Reserve. The club will pay fixed energy costs set at 20 per cent less than their last annual bill over the next 10 years.

Sturt Lions President John Vander Veeken welcomed the opportunity to be part of the scheme, which had the potential to reduce the club’s power bills by up to $17,000 over the decade.

“The savings mean that we can buy new equipment and invest in the club,” he said. “We’re a community club and we support our local community, and green energy is something that is important to them – there’s no doubt about that.”

Sturt Lions is one of the state’s largest soccer clubs, home to 700 junior players, along with men’s and women’s senior and social teams.

City of Mitcham Mayor Dr Heather Holmes-Ross said Council tenants with viable buildings, including sports and community clubs, had been offered the opportunity to be part of the scheme.

“We’re aiming to equip all Council buildings with renewable energy to lock in long term environmental benefits and cost savings for our community.”
