Pasadena Community Centre Upgrade

The newly redeveloped Pasadena Community Centre has celebrated its first birthday at 47 Adelaide Terrace, Pasadena, following a major upgrade to improve access, usability and community connection.

Driven by strong community advocacy, the project was initiated after local residents alerted Council to the sale of the former Sea Scout Hall and its potential as a neighbourhood centre. Council committed $3.123 million to the project, supported by $600,000 from the Government of South Australia on behalf of the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, $300,000 through a Federal Government election pledge and a $167,000 Changing Places grant.

Designed by Troppo Architects and delivered by Cook Building, the redevelopment retains the character features of the original 1960s building while introducing a range of modern, energy-efficient upgrades. The roof has been raised to improve natural light and ventilation, and the building has been better integrated with the surrounding outdoor areas through the addition of new verandahs. Recycled materials have been used throughout, including the original jarrah flooring and the installation of solar panels. The kitchen has been upgraded to service both the main hall and a future outdoor community cafe. Other improvements include additional toilets, a kitchenette, an extended activity room, a Toy Library, keyless entry, and enhanced accessibility features.

The Centre now operates six days a week, including evening programs on four weekdays and Saturdays. Sunday hours commenced in October 2025.

An interview with Vilma Wood

During the 1970s, as a mother of four, Vilma felt a pressing need for a community centre in the area. Responding to this need Vilma raised money by selling soft drinks, running car washes, accepting donations, and collecting cans at events. Staying true to her commitment to community service, Vilma preserved the funds collected during those years and, later, joyfully contributed them to the Council upon the purchase of the Pasadena Community Centre. Known for her skills as a seamstress, Vilma asked for the raised funds to be used to purchase a sewing machine. The sewing machine acquired has become an integral part of the centre, used regularly on Thursdays and Friday evenings. Vilma's dedication extended further as she joined the Pasadena Community Centre Advisory Group, attending initial meetings until her health declined. Her joy upon the centre’s acquisition was evident, though tinged with the regret that it hadn't happened sooner for her to fully enjoy its benefits.
