The new Pasadena Community Centre is now open after a major upgrade, offering extended opening hours and a range of new programs.

The Centre welcomed the community on Tuesday 5 August for a day of activities including performances by the Community Choir and an Outdoor Messy Play session.

City of Mitcham Mayor Dr Heather Holmes-Ross said it was an exciting milestone that would be welcomed by residents of Council’s western suburbs.

“This project has been driven by the community from the outset – it’s something that has grown organically,” she said. “It’s filled an obvious gap and will be an incredible addition to the area. I’m sure we will see many connections built and maintained here, helping to create a strong, vibrant and resilient community.”

City of Mitcham purchased the former Sea Scout Hall at 47 Adelaide Terrace four years ago after residents alerted Council to the sale of the hall and its potential as a community space.

Council pledged $2.134 million to upgrade the centre, supported by $500,000 from the Government of South Australia on behalf of the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and $300,000 from a Federal Government election pledge. In addition, State and Federal governments contributed $167,000 towards a $202,000 Changing Places facility, with Council funding the balance.

Designed by Troppo Architects and constructed by Cook Building, the new centre retains the character features of the 1960s building and has a focus on sustainability and energy efficiency.

The roof structure has been raised to provide better ventilation, light and cooling and the building has been opened up to the rear garden to better connect the space to outside areas.

Other energy efficient measures include the addition of verandahs, bulk insulation, internal and external glazing. A range of elements including solar panels and original hardwood jarrah floors have been recycled.

The building includes an upgraded kitchen that serves the main hall space and an outdoor community café, additional toilets, kitchenette and expanded activity room.

Opening hours have increased to six days, including evenings on four weekdays and Saturdays, along with Sundays from October 2025.

City of Mitcham’s Active Citizen of the Year 2024 Jody Moate, who instigated the project along with fellow St Marys resident Norah Frost, said the new building would be cooler and warmer, more inclusive and accessible.

“It’s been a wonderful place to connect with neighbours and friends,” she said. “The Community Centre is a ‘third place’ where people can drop in and feel comfortable. Local neighbourly groups have been able to thrive here too.”
