City of Mitcham residents have embraced Mitcham’s Community Renewable Energy Program, with 538 households signing up for solar panels and or batteries.

Installations are underway and will be completed at a rate of up to 200 a month.

The program, managed by solar energy supplier ShineHub, was introduced to help households and businesses across Mitcham to install solar and battery systems for no upfront costs as part of Council’s commitment to promote and accelerate the community’s transition to renewable energy.

City of Mitcham Mayor Dr Heather Holmes-Ross said she was thrilled with the response from the community to the program, which includes the option to participate in a Virtual Power Plant.

“People are really excited, the response has been fantastic,” she said. “Of those who have signed up, 535 are getting a battery and joining the Virtual Power Plant. The City of Mitcham will soon have an additional 5.5MW hours of energy storage capacity, which is the equivalent to a small fossil-fueled power station.”

Bellevue Heights resident James Down welcomed the opportunity to sign up for the scheme after experiencing a 36-hour blackout during lockdown last year.

“When I first heard about the virtual power plant, I thought it was a fantastic opportunity that not only could benefit myself, but my neighbours, and also the environment,” he said. “And we’re producing our own power and not having to rely on fossil fuels.

“I really like the idea that I can sell more power to the grid, but I can also help my neighbours out at times when the grid is under pressure.”

The first bulk buy has now ended but a second bulk buy is planned for 2023. For updates visit ShineHub.
